Doppelgänger

Press release 24.08.2021

From 8 to 26 September 2021, the Dansaert district will host Doppelgänger, a co-production of the city of Brussels, OPENART.TODAY, and KANAL-Centre Pompidou. Doppelgänger is an art stroll that brings together around 12 emerging artists, who represent the dynamism and diversity of the Brussels art scene. This exhibition appears in eight storefronts windows and three external interventions in a walk that runs from the Bourse/Beurs to Atelier KANAL from KANAL-Centre Pompidou.

Doppelgänger was created as a reaction to our current state of latent alienation, reinforced by a period of almost zero visibility and an economic void for young artists. It refers to the codes of marketing, industrial production, graphic identity and the values that drive the world of economy and art.

Through the infiltration of works of art into unoccupied commercial cells, this exhibition tour highlights the way in which artists seize and disrupt these codes.

The main artery of the art walk is Rue Antoine Dansaert, a downtown thoroughfare that is historically linked to creators and that is accessible to the public day and night. The exhibition offers a fresh look at the way the cultural and economic sectors intertwine. It raises the question of where art works are exhibited and how they are perceived by a wider audience, all in the spirit of a potential return of art to the public arena.

The art stroll ends at Atelier KANAL (KANAL-Centre Pompidou), which has invited emerging artists to participate for the first time.

OPENART.TODAY is a platform created by Hervé Charles aimed at the conception, production and condensation of artistic proposals that place the artist at the center of the project. As part of this mission, Openart.today accompanies artists and private or public structures in designing exhibitions, residencies, art integration projects, and collections.

The city of Brussels supports a new way of using commercial spaces in one of the most emblematic neighbourhoods of the capital.

The exhibition trail Doppelgänger, organised in partnership with KANAL-Centre Pompidou, aims to support both artists and shopkeepers by drawing large crowds to the neighbourhood for this attractive event. But the organisers also have their eyes on the future: the cultural and economic stakeholders of this event, including future neighbour KANAL Foundation, are creating a number of commercial units with the aim of bringing new life to the district after the pandemic.

This event is made possible in partnership with asbl Entreprendre Bruxelles.
